And We did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others - will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.

{ وما أرسلنا قبلك من المرسلين إلا إنهم ليأكلون الطعام ويمشون في الأسواق } فأنت مثلهم في ذلك، وقد قيل لهم مثل ما قيل لك { وجلنا بعضكم لبعض فتنة } بلية ابتلى الغني بالفقير والصحيح بالمريض، والشريف بالوضيع يقول الثاني في كلّ: ما لي لا أكون كالأول في كلّ: { أتصبرون } على ما تسمعون ممن ابتليتم بهم استفهام بمعنى الأمر: أي اصبروا { وكان ربك بصيرا } بمن يصبر وبمن يجزع .
{And We did not send before you any messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets.} So you are like them in this, and they were told the same as was told to you. {And We made some of you a trial for others.} A trial by which the rich were tested by the poor, the healthy by the sick, and the noble by the lowly. The second says in each: Why should I not be like the first in each: {Will you be patient?} with what you hear from those with whom you were tested. This is an interrogative with the meaning of a command: that is, be patient. {And ever is your Lord Seeing.} of who is patient and who is impatient.
