Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow.
Tafseer
{ فلعلك باخع } مهلك { نفسك على آثارهم } بعدهم أي بعد توليهم عنك { إن لم يؤمنوا بهذا الحديث } القرآن { أسفا } غيظا وحزنا منك لحرصك على إيمانهم، ونصبه على المفعول له .
{Perhaps you will destroy yourself over their footsteps} after they turned away from you {if they do not believe in this message} the Qur’an {out of grief} anger and sadness from you because of your eagerness for their belief, and it is in the accusative case as the object of the verb.
