When the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, called his people and said: “I am a warner to you before a severe punishment,” his uncle Abu Lahab said: “Perish you! Is this why you called us?” The verse “The hands of Abu Lahab” was revealed, meaning his whole body. The two hands are used metaphorically because most actions are performed with them, and this sentence is a supplication. “And perish” is he who has lost. This is news like their saying: “May God destroy him,” and he has perished. When the Prophet frightened him with the punishment, and he said: “If he is truly my nephew, then I will ransom myself from him with my money and my children,” the verse “His wealth and what he earned will not avail him.” was revealed.
