{ غُلبت الروم } وهم أهل الكتاب غلبتها فارس وليسوا أهل كتاب بل يعبدون الأوثان ففرح كفار مكة بذلك، وقالوا للمسلمين: نحن نغلبكم كما غلبت فارس الروم.
{The Romans were defeated} and they are the People of the Book. The Persians defeated them, and they are not People of the Book, but they worship idols. So the infidels of Mecca rejoiced at that and said to the Muslims: We will defeat you just as the Persians defeated the Romans.
