But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.

{ فأعرضوا } عن شكره وكفروا { فأرسلنا عليهم سيل العرم } جمع عرمة وهو ما يمسك الماء من بناء وغيره إلى وقت حاجته، أي سيل واديهم الممسوك بما ذكر فأغرق جنتيهم وأموالهم { وبدلناهم بجنتيهم جنتين ذواتي } تثنية ذوات مفرد على الأصل { أُكُلٍ خَمْطِ } مرِّ بشع بإضافة أكل بمعنى مأكول وتركها ويعطف عليه { وأثل وشيء من سدر قليل } .
{So they turned away} from thanking Him and disbelieved. {So We sent upon them the flood of the dam} plural of dam, which is what holds water from a building or other things until the time of its need, meaning the flood of their valley held back as mentioned, so it drowned their gardens and their wealth. {And We replaced their two gardens with two gardens of good food} dual of good food, singular according to the original. {bitter and foul food} bitter and ugly, with the addition of dam in the sense of something eaten and leaving it out, and it is conjoined with it. {And tamarisk and some lote trees, few}.
