38 : 12

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو الْأَوْتَادِ

The people of Noah denied before them, and [the tribe of] 'Aad and Pharaoh, the owner of stakes,

Tafseer

{ كذبت قبلهم قوم نوح } تأنيث قوم باعتبار المعنى { وعاد وفرعون ذو الأوتاد } كان يتد لكل من يغضب عليه أربعة أوتاد يشد إليها يديه ورجليه ويعذبه .

{The people of Noah denied before them} The feminine form of “people” is taken into account in the meaning. {And Aad and Pharaoh, lord of the stakes} He would stake four pegs for anyone who became angry with him, to which he would tie his hands and feet and torture him.
